Yeah we have a huge problem in our nation. I'm a gamer my self, have been and probably will be till the end of my days, I guess i can say that at 20 since it's been like that since the old Mega Drive when i was 4.

This is a funny thing, i just took a WII to the store to get a new chip so i could play pirate games. Do i like that? no way but the funny thing is that the store was a Pro-Games, probablly the biggest Game Store in terms of Brazil Wide, no way to compare it to Game Stop but it is the biggest.

So you can buy pirate games at the biggest set of stores on the Country, another funny thing is that you go to the shopping mall and for your surprise they sell the original game and the pirate.

Let's do the math here:

Acording to all chip models for the Wii avalible at the moment it can cost you either 200, 250, 290 or 350 to get a new chip installed to it. Now the best Wii game out there cost you 199 the original at the mall but for your surprise at the same store you can get it for 15, and they have an awesome deal, buy 2 games and win the 3rd

No I'm not trying to protect the pirating here in BR but i find it funny that you can buy pirate CONSOLE games on the mall but you can't buy pirate Music and Pc games. What about the Pirate I-pods? Theye ven look the same. The thing is we were forgotten and if it doesn't bring any good to us we will just mind our own buisness. Since MOST of PC games are now made in BR you can get them at a price range from 99 - 39 bucks, since we have a "BIG" song industry we don't get pirate CDs on the mall, we get cheap national music but you have to pay 100s for that awesome CD from that british band you like.

But again our Game company sucks and our Technology company do as well so let's just enable Pirate things to be sold at the mall, who gives a shit if it's original we don't get anything and if it's pirate we don't get anything either whatever it doesn't matter to me.
It has to stop one day.

Congrats on your writing, dude. You related cause and consequence pretty well in translating fatefully the dilemma of the average Brazilian gamer.I too suffer from this bad.But I, honestly, stick with the alternative, otherwise I wouldn´t have experienced half of last generation´s "pearls".All ethical problems aside, piracy works, for us, as a way of not getting left behind, of having access to the latest, no matter how it reaches us.Many might throw rocks at me, but, piracy/download to me, a player and game design student, is absolutely necessary.

Oh...and I think that Bioshock, on one hand, considering the artistic elements, is very, very pleasing, but, on the other hand, relative to its gameplay constituent, sucks big time as just another shooter.Considering this area, the gameplay, I prefer its contemporary and underapreciated Raw Danger(PS2).

I was thinking about the download of illegal games and it reminded the Steam.

Sell a original game by download it's a great idea. You really wanna buy that game but the taxes doesn't colaborate. So you go and buy the pirate? No! You access your VG Dashboard connected to the internet, go to the marketplace and buy the original game, buy with you international cc and start downloaading to play after!

Some may say that wouldn't buy the original downloadable version because there's no box, manuals and artworks but what if the price of the downloadable game was minor than the original disc copy?! Uh?!

What about you guys? Will you buy a original game with a cheap price by the internet?

I'll sure will.

I think that everyone agree that the problem lies on the taxes.

But I disagree with Timóteo. When he said that the big companies have forgotten about us. They haven't. They are just prowling our borders, waiting for our "defensive" taxes to wear of. But even in this scenario there are some bold companies that have crossed those lines, such as Microsoft and Nintendo, represented by Lamatel. It's true that their prices haven't reached a "fair" price yet, but I bet they're willing to do so, unfortunately they can't for now.

And regarding piracy, I got kinda shocked the other day when reading my daily feeds, someone stated that around 95% of the Nintendo DS games in US are illegal copies.

Those numbers made me wonder, will the piracy end if the taxes are removed? I won't risk a guess. Really.

YOU SAID IT DUDE!!! XD

But the things look better everyday. The prices are getting lower and, because of import taxes, sometimes is better to pay a little more in instalments than to buy in ebay on 1 payment. I know, it still sucks. But I believe things are getting better. There are Viideo Game rentals trough the internet (just in Sao Paolo for now) that let you stay with a game for a month.
I buy original games for the principle but also because I'm irresponsible with money, so I am NO example. =P
That being said, the brazilian industry still have a long way to become even a little like it is in the US. I will have to, once again, surrender fo piracy and buy a backup device for my DS and unlock my ps2. I'm a wannabe developer (as you know... =P) and I must try a lots of games. It doesn't make it less wrong because I'm downloading, but I won't give money to the street sellers, as I use to do in the times of the PSone, again. It took too long and too much money to trade my Playstation bootleg collection for originals to simply go back now.
I guess the games being translated in portuguese (not all, but some) and lowering price of Xbox 360 games and PC will help it. It will take AGES to go back to we had in the 90's, but I will keep my fingers crossed.
I also copy my original games to my friends that can't buy it. I lend a lot of games to them. I know it's silly, but is what I can do. It's a complex issue because most ppl don't love games like we do and games, altough things will get better. The new consoles are too expensive to justify spending all the money and have it breaking one month later with no warranty. And there are the added benefit of the services like Live and WiiConect (that's the name?).
Maybe is a little naive, and surely will take a lot of time, but I think things will get better as the economy gets stronger. It has to! I'm crossing my fingers!!! T_T
    E joguei Bioshock! Cara... É tudo que tu me disse quando tu veio aqui em Porto Alegre e muito mais! hehe. ^^ Mas 259 reais ainda é muito... ;_;

IMHO, the taxes are the root of all evil, and games are among the ones that suffer the most. I want shiny original games to stuff into my console, but I'm stuck with old taxes from decades ago that make buying a game here or abroad a impossible feat if you're not among the few with a lot of money to spare. It is a sad, sad reality to us all in the banana country. If some of the energy used in combating piracy were used to renew this old-fashioned tax law and make things a little better...
